Scholarships and grants can help pay for a significant portion of a study abroad program. Seemingly interchangeable, there are subtle differences between grants and scholarships. Scholarships are typically awarded based on merit, while grants are distributed based on need or prior agreement. While “different,” both are essentially free money.

Federal Grants

Students who demonstrate financial need can apply for grants distributed by the US federal government.

Pell Grant

The Pell Grant is awarded based on financial need. In order to qualify, your child must be a full-time student with an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) below the limit that is determined each year. Speak with your financial aid adviser for more information about applying for the Pell Grant.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) program is for students demonstrating exceptional financial need. In order to qualify for an FSEOG, students must have received a Pell Grant. Pell Grant recipients with the lowest Expected Family Contribution (EFC) are considered first.

Scholarships

Scholarships are given to students who demonstrate merit. While there are national scholarships available, smaller scholarships given by local businesses and communities are also available and are less competitive, making securing funding easier.

Gilman International Scholarship

The Gilman International Scholarship is available to undergraduate students receiving Federal Pell Grant funding.

Boren Scholarships

The Boren Scholarships offer over $20,000 annual to undergraduate students to study abroad in underrepresented countries.

National Geographic’s Glimpse Scholarships

Work for National Geographic’s Glimpse magazine while abroad. Stipends are given to write stories and record video while abroad. If you’re considering blogging, why not kill two birds with one stone?

Rotary Club

Contact your local Rotary Club for scholarship and travel stipends—and a free dinner!

NAFSA’s Archive of Scholarships and Grants

NAFSA, the international educators lobbying firm based in Washington, D.C. suggests scholarships to study and intern abroad.

FinAid!

FinAid! is an excellent online search tool for scholarships, grants and loans.

In addition, contacting your university’s individual departments is helpful. They often offer scholarships that aren’t well promoted, meaning the applicant pool is smaller. Panrimo will read any cover letters or scholarship and grant applications you’ve written and we’re happy to offer our suggestions.

Panrimo Scholarships and Grants

In addition to the resources listed above, Panrimo offers our own grants and scholarships, to be used in conjugation with other forms of financial aid. Panrimo’s grants and scholarships can ease the costs of an international education program.

Scholarships

Panrimo offers our own scholarships, designed to reward students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, community leadership, and ambition. In order to receive a scholarship from Panrimo, students must submit their transcripts, two letters of recommendation – at least one of which must come from a professor at their home institution – and thoughtful, well-written responses to a series of scholarship questions.

There are a limited number of scholarships each year, awarded to the most qualified students who have applied. Scholarships range from $250-$2,000, are contingent upon the length of program, and awarded on an individual basis, being applied toward the student’s program costs.

Grants

If your home university has signed an Affiliation Agreement with Panrimo, Panrimo offers grants to each student enrolling from the aforementioned university. Panrimo awards grants as follows:

  • $200 for each student enrolling in a summer program
  • $500 for each student enrolling in an academic semester program
  • $700 for each student enrolling in an academic year program
