Student Tips

Spending time at US universities gives our staff an edge on knowing what college students know and what they wished they knew before going abroad. Mixing those conversations with our own experiences in another country, the Panrimo staff has compiled the “I wish I knew that” list of helpful hints when abroad.

  • Pack light, then buy shoes there. Nothing says local like a new pair of sneakers.
  • Know local slang and clothes styles to blend in–we’ll help you there with our Survival Packet.
  • Talk to locals and get to know them. That’s why you’re there.
  • Travel the city, every part of it. You’ll be surprised at how many “cool” stores, cafes, and homes you’ll find off the beaten path.
  • Ask for help when needed. If lost on the metro or you think you’re heading the wrong way down a one way street, chances are someone will help. They got lost once or twice in their lives, too.
  • Don’t go to the McDonald’s more than once. Eat locally–it tastes better and it’s cheaper!
  • Wake up early on Saturdays. There’s always something to do, and there will be no room for regret after you leave.
  • If you’re thinking of traveling on the weekend or staying longer after your program, do it! You won’t regret it.
  • Planes and underground metros are fast, but cars, buses, trains, and foot are always more visually appealing. Make the time and be open to the extra hour–you may stumble onto something exciting.
  • Speak softly, but carry a big stick. Teddy Roosevelt’s famous quote rings true when you’re in foreign land: Don’t go out of your way to be noticed, but walk confidently and with poise.
