Beijing: Fall 2012

A Day in the Life in Beijing

Wake up. American-style residence hall makes adjusting easy. Warm shower, bowl of cornflakes and milk, short walk to school. Captivating professor. Study class notes in quiet XiangShan Park. Sip oolong tea near residence hall. Register for weekend taichi class. Sweet! Dinner with Panroamers at Sansu Restaurant of fried duck, white rice and steamed vegetables. Check out Beijing Film Fest. This city’s packed with people, but there’s a niche for me.

Beijing is the political capital of China and home to 20 million people. That’s like 2 ½ New York Cities! It is home to the Communist party and major politics of the country. Are you ready for red flags and secret police in civilian uniforms? They’re there! But don’t worry; they are just present to make sure no one’s talking smack about communism. So keep opinion to yourself and observe.

With a city this large there is much to see and do. There are many museums, historical buildings (think Forbidden City), and unique parts of town like Sanlitun for popular bars and international stores, 798 District for the art and hipster community (yes, there are hipster communists), and Olympic Village.
